Artist Ben Young has been sculpting glass by hand for over a decade now, however, of late his work has been grabbing more attention from galleries and collectors world wide. Looking through his back catalogue makes you wonder how it took people so long to cotton on to this unique sculptors talent.
Ben’s formative years were spent growing up along side the idyllic Bay of plenty in New Zealand. His childhood immersed in this wonderful landscape has clearly influenced the themes portrayed in Ben’s work , mainly that of nature and in particular bodies of water.
Both his skills as an arrtist and his love of the natural world are brought together in these pieces to create something beautifully organic from the most ridged of materials, float glass. As Ben notes him self ‘I hope viewers might imagine the work as something “living” that creates the illusion of space, movement, depth and sense of spatial being. I like to play with the irony between the glass being a solid material and how I can form such natural and organic shapes.’
Currently represented by kirra Galleries in his adopted home Australia, Ben has been creating some stunning pieces and we hope he continues to do so for a long while yet.
